Adam Johnson, winger for the Sunderland Association Football Club in the English Premier League, has been suspended by the team after an arrest on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year-old.

Dan Roan, editor for BBC Sports, was one of the first who reported the development.

According to reports, Johnson was arrested by Durham police in his mansion on Monday morning and bailed the same day. Sunderland AFC said in the statement that Johnson will be suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation.

Meanwhile, Johnson’s girlfriend, Stacey Flounders’ mum defended the Sunderland winger saying that she believes that Johnson is innocent that they will support the player.

"He is 100 per cent innocent and we will stand by him. He hasn't been found guilty of anything,” Flounder’s mum said to mirror.co.uk. "He is a great lad and has not done anything wrong. This is just a horrible situation.”

Johnson was signed by Sunderland in August of 2012 to a deal worth over 10 million pounds per year. He has also played for Manchester City from 2010 to 2012 and for various squads since 2004. The 27 year old winger also played for the England national team, with the youth club from 2005 to 2009 and the senior team since 2010.
