College education is very expensive. Aside from tuition fees, students have to pay for projects, books, food, and many more that it’s almost impossible to save extra cash even if they have part-time jobs on the side. Here are some practical ways for college students to save money.

  1. Don’t buy, just borrow or rent

Textbooks are very pricey and buying new ones can leave you broke. Be practical by borrowing from your friends. There are also students who rent their books at available prices.

  1. Live cheaply

Instead of staying in one of those posh campus pads or apartments found near the area, live in one of the cheap dorms offered by the university. You can save a lot and make new friends too.

  1. Use your ID wisely

Many establishments like supermarkets, theatres, restaurants and the like offer discounts to students. Get your student ID and always have it with you wherever you go.

  1. Limit eating out

Just because your classmates can afford eating out all the time doesn’t mean you have to spend most of your allowance just to follow their lead. The most practical thing to do is prepare your own meals or you can ask your roomies to chip in and have food delivered. There are universities that offer affordable student meal plans too.

  1. Say no to vices

Smoking and drinking are two vices you have to avoid if you want to save money. Cigarettes and alcohol are affordable but once you buy them regularly, you’ll be surprised at how much you’re paying for them after a month.

  1. Get a scholarship

Being a scholar when in college has its perks. A scholarship helps pay your tuition and miscellaneous fees. Some even cover expenses for textbooks and dormitory.

  1. Have a job

College students have flexible schedules that allow them to take on a part-time job. Many businesses like restaurants and malls offer jobs for students. You may also consider being a tutor and get paid for your expertise.

It’s hard being a college student especially if you don’t have enough financial resources. Fortunately, there are ways for college students to save money and help them get through their chosen degree.
