Apple fans will after all get to immediately toy with the phablet-size 5.5-inch iPhone 6 on its rumoured September 19 release date alongside the 4.7-inch edition, according to a new report.

Simultaneous but limited rollout

The bigger iPhone 6 will actually sit on Apple Store shelves, based on a report picked up this week by Apple Insider from French blog site iGen.fr, on the same day that the regular device will be made available to consumers.

"The 5.5-inch model will also be available to buy on Sept 19," Apple Insider said on its report, somehow clarifying that the device is not merely for pre-order but for actual purchase beginning on the third Friday of September 2014.

However, those planning to snap up the jumbo-sized iPhone 6 may need to join up the queues that are forming this early on select Apple Stores as the same report indicated that the bigger device will be in limited quantities.

The report that Apple is compelled to sell the larger of the upcoming iPhone 6 despite the impending threat of supply issues is in line with the latest research note issued last week by Ming-chi Kuo of KGI Securities - that the next iPhone will likely be hounded by initial stock problems in the first few months of its availability.

This is true not only for the 5.5-inch but also for the 4.7-inch model, Kuo said.

iPhone 6 Plus

Notwithstanding, it appears that Apple is going ahead with its September 9 and 19 plans and one solid sign of this is the latest news from Japanese blog site MacOtakara, which 9to5Mac has first pointed to.

The report claimed that the tech giant has finalised the official name of the two devices. As long-speculated, the smaller version will take the name iPhone 6 while the bigger variant will be known as the iPhone 6 Plus.

If true, the MacOtakara report will essentially kill the earlier suggestion that the first iOS phablet will follow the naming convention that was applied with the MacBook Air and the iPad Air. In other words, there will be no iPhone Air to expect.

128GB of storage space and more

In spite of the reported name change, most of the rumoured killer specs and features about the supersized iPhone 6 are likely to be delivered on D-Day. G4Games has discovered a promotional campaign from China Mobile that apparently revealed the key specs and features packed with the next iPhone.

Most of the details provided were in synch with earlier rumours but two features really stood out as the China Mobile promo claimed that the upcoming device will boast of waterproof/dustproof protection and up to 128GB memory.

While the specifications seemed geared for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, Kuo has earlier stated that 128GB storage space will likely debut for the two iPhone models that Apple will announce on September 9, which is expected to be followed by the devices' actual release date on September 19.
