Staying true to the glamour and glitz it is known for, the 2016 Met Gala red carpet was filled with celebrities donning their most elegant and on-theme frocks.

Held at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, the event known as “Oscars of the East Coast” celebrated the opening of “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.” Fans eagerly anticipated their favourite A-listers from the movie, music, fashion and sports industries who paraded in one of the most stylish celebrity event.

Film and TV actresses seemed to be the big hits of the night. Some musical icons, on the other hand, may have taken the theme too literally, and ended up among the big misses and even messes. Here are five of the best dressed, as well as the worst dressed, female celebrities at the 2016 Met Gala:

BEST DRESSED

Nicole Kidman
Known to be one of the most fashionable celebrities in all times, Nicole Kidman did not disappoint at the 2016 Met Gala with her glittery two-piece Alexander McQueen gown. The Australian actress showed how a woman of her age can still pull off a midriff cutoff and with style, to boot.

Beyoncé

Unlike some of her colleagues in the music industry, Beyonce shined on the red carpet with a peachy latex gown by Givenchy. The Queen B rocked the hi-tech fabric, and proved that being on-theme does not mean one should be tacky or weird. Compared to her “barely there” gown last year, this was definitely a stark contrast.

Kendall Jenner

Her sisters Kim and Kylie were also spotted sashaying their most glamorous selves at the event, but Kendall Jenner absolutely took the spotlight with her Versace cut-out gown that highlighted her fab physique. She paired her colorful frock with a simple and sleek ponytail, which gave off young and fresh vibe that is totally appropriate for her age.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

She’s known to confidently own the runway as a Victoria’s Secret Model, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley did the same with the 2016 Met Gala. Donning a white Ralph Lauren gown featuring a high sexy slit, she definitely deserves to be in the best dressed list. With actor Jason Statham as her arm candy, it seems the “Transformers” actress could do no wrong.

Emma Watson

Amid the long dresses and metallic gowns, Emma Watson showed everyone why she deserves to be Beauty. The 26-year-old actress dared to be different by wearing pants to the red carpet, partnering it with a long train. Her Calvin Klein number is indeed a genius, making her stand out from the other A-listers present.

Runner-up for Best Dressed: Kate Bosworth

Actress Kate Bosworth almost made it to the top five, with her dainty and remarkable Dolce & Gabbana gown. The color of her dress, coupled with her classy headpiece, is a breath of fresh air on the red carpet. Someone better advise her to drop the yellow eyeshadow next time, though.

WORST DRESSED

Madonna

If there’s anyone who could pull off high-tech fashion, it should be Madonna. However, she greatly missed on this one, wearing a Givenchy number that is reminiscent of Egyptian mummy with bondage vibes. She successfully proved that she has perky butt cheeks considering she’s already 57 years old, but it wasn’t a pretty sight at all.

Taylor Swift

Grammy winner Taylor Swift is reputed to be among the most fashionable singers out there, but her 2016 Met Gala gown spelled “Trouble” right from the start. Her bejeweled Louis Vuitton gown highlighted her fit bod, but it looked like a prom dress gone bad. She looked like a Goth girl wannabe who decided to play with Gladiator sandals, but here’s to hoping she’ll recover from the fashion fiasco soon.

Katy Perry

Speaking of fashion fiasco, Taylor Swift’s reported archenemy Katy Perry did not do well on the red carpet, too. Her velvet and gold-trimmed Prada number belonged to the love-it-or-hate-it category, but it bordered more on the hate. Counting the fingerless leather gloves, the “Roar” singer’s representation of futuristic fashion look bleak – and it’s not just the color.

Lady Gaga

Completing the singers-who-missed file is Lady Gaga. Her no-pants look seem to have taken inspiration from Madonna’s cheeky dress. It looks like instead of moving forward with fashion, the “American Horror Story” actress pulled one of the gowns in her “before” collection, back when she was known for her eclectic taste.

Alicia Vikander

The recent announcement of Alicia Vikander as the next Lara Croft in the “Tomb Raider” reboot got everyone excited, but her red carpet dress for this event was considered a downer. In what could only be described as a confusing mish-mash of fabrics, her Louis Vuitton number is definitely not a winner this time.

Runner-up for Worst Dressed: Gigi Hadid

Gigi Hadid is the kind of girl who could put on a dilapidated sack but still come out fabulous. The “it-girl” for the moment failed to bring it, however, at the 2016 Met Gala. Her sheer Tommy Hilfiger gown with metallic top did not do justice to her usual stylish self, and not even Zayn Malik – with that suit of armour sleeves – could save her.
