Sixth seed David Goffin and eighth seed Dominic Thiem won their respective first round matches at the Pat Rafter Arena on Tuesday. Goffin beat Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, 6-4 6-4, and rising 22-year-old Austrian Dominic Thiem beat Australian James Duckworth, 3-6 6-4 6-3, to secure their places in the next round.

Also advancing on Tuesday in Brisbane is Lucas Pouille with a three-set win, 4-6 6-3 7-5, over Yoshihito Nishioka. Pouille will play Goffin in the second round.

Oliver Anderson is the fourth Australian to bow out of the 2016 Brisbane International. The Brisbane native lost to Ivan Dodig, 6-3 6-2, at Show Court 2 on Tuesday. Dodig will play 2015 finalist Milos Raonic next for a quarterfinal berth.

Meanwhile, Japanese number two seed Kei Nishikori will headline day 4 of the tournament. Nishikori will play his first singles match of 2016 against Kukushkin, whom he owns a 3-0 head-to-head advantage. The duo’s most recent meeting took place in the first round of the 2012 Wimbledon Championships.

Thiem, the youngest player in the top 20, will return to Pat Rafter Arena to play against American Denis Kudla. The American previously beat Aussie wild card John-Patrick Smith in the first round, 4-6 6-3 6-2.
