Roger Federer’s quest to win another grand slam was shattered after he was eliminiated in the 2015 French Open. The Swiss tennis legend lost to fellow compatriot and Davis Cup teammate Stan Wawrinka in straight sets in the Roland Garros quarterfinals on Tuesday 6-4 6-3 7-6.

Federer went into the quarterfinals match with a 16-2 head-to-head record with Wawrinka. The last time that he played against Wawrinka was during the semifinals of the Association of Tennis Professionals’ World Tour 1000 Masters Tournament at the Rome Open. It has been three years since Federer, a 17-time grand slam champion, won a major title. Federer’s last major title came during the 2012 Wimbledon when he defeated Andy Murray.

Federer was unable to break Wawrinka’s serve. Wawrinka, who won his first major title at the 2014 Australian Open, was hitting winners everywhere. In the match that lasted two hours and nine minutes, Wawrinka scored 43 winners and only 28 unforced errors. Wawrinka is now three victories over Federer in all their 19 meetings.

Meanwhile, Wawrinka will play against local favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinals. Tsonga advanced in the last four after beating Japan No. 1 Kei Nishikori in a grueling five-setter match 6-1 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-3. The Lausanne native has a 3-3 head-to-head record against Tsonga. At the Roland Garros, Wawrinka has a 1-1 win-loss record against Tsonga. He defeated Tsonga in the Round 32 in 2011, but Tsonga beat him in the Round 16 in 2012.

The last two spots in the final four of the 2015 French Open will be contested by top seed Novak Djokovic, five-time defending champion Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Spain’s David Ferrer. Djokovic will play against Nadal for a spot in the last four, while Murray is set up for a clash against Ferrer.

In women’s singles, Serbian tennis star Ana Ivanovic has also advanced in the semifinals. Ivanovic defeated Elina Svitolina in straight sets 6-3 6-2. Ivanovic will play Russia’s Lucie Safarova, who beat Garbine Muruguza 7-6 6-3, to clinch a spot in the final four. Safarova was the player who crushed reigning French Open champion Maria Sharapova in the fourth round.
