For the third straight time, Sam Stosur has lost to Andrea Petkovic. The German proved too good for Stosur when they clashed in the second round of the 2015 China Open beating Australia’s highest-ranked player in straight sets 6-2 7-5.

Stosur acknowledged the 13th seed German for playing an exceptional match. “I think she played pretty well tonight,” Stosur said in a report posted on her official website. “I had enough opportunities that I then wasn’t able to capitalise on, a few too many probably loose errors at the wrong time against a player like Petko you might get away with it once or twice, but you can’t keep doing that and letting her back in.”

Stosur had five double faults during the match. She won 54 percent of her first serve points and 35 percent of her second serve points. The 31-year-old Australian had not won against Petkovic since winning in their first meeting back in 2012 during the Fed Cup playoffs 6-4 6-1.

Meanwhile, Petkovic was thrilled to have booked a place in the third round. She revealed in the post-match interview that “aggressiveness” was the key to overcome Stosur’s test.

“I really tried on each ball to be in good balance and tried to really rip it,” Petkovic said. “Sometimes, it’s actually good if you lose a practice set.”

Petkovic was referring to a practice session with Stosur before the match, where she was having trouble returning the ball. Fortunately for the German, things went in her favour at Moon Court on Tuesday. Petkovic will play Sara Errani in the third round.
