Fans of “13 Reasons Why” are hoping that the drama series would return for a season 2. They believe it is only a matter of time before Netflix makes the announcement. Ross Butler, the actor who played Zach Dempsey in the show, has left his role as Reggie on “Riverdale,” and there is speculation in the media that he did so because he wants to work on “13 Reasons Why” season 2.

"We love what Ross did with the role of Reggie, but because of his commitments to other projects, we couldn't use him nearly as much as we would have liked," series creator of "Riverdale" Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told TVLine. Various websites are now speculating that Butler may have quit the CW show because his schedule clashed with “13 Reasons Why.” He has always shown great interest in a second season of the show.

“I think there's so much more to tell. I'm just crossing my fingers," Butler told Entertainment Weekly in a previous interview. However, both Netflix and Butler have not made any formal comment on the issue. Author Jay Asher, whose young adult novel of the same title inspired the series, also expressed interest in continuing the story.

"I’d just like a continuation of all those characters,” Asher told EW as well, adding that he is curious to know what happens to characters like Clay, Alex, Jessica and others. He thought of writing a sequel at some point but dropped the idea. It will be interesting to see what the director of the series has in store, since Asher's novel has a different ending than the TV adaptation.

In the last episode of "13 Reasons Why," Hannah Bakers' parents sue the school for her suicide, Alex shoots himself in the head and is in critical condition, Courtney is yet to come out as a lesbian, and Bryce's fate is still undecided for raping Jessica and Hannah, especially since Clay has audio evidence against him. It is not shown in the season finale if Hannah's parents win the lawsuit against the school. Many such stories seemed to have been deliberately left open by the show makers, thus hinting at a possible “13 Reason Why” season 2.
