2012 has been on fulfilling year for fans and celebrities alike. With only a few hours left on the clock before everyone bids 2012 farewell, here are the twelve most talked about social media stories of the big 2012. From Miley Cyrus' sudden engagement to Channing Tatum crowned sexiest man alive.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynold's secret wedding may have taken the world by surprise but nothing beats Miley Cyrus and her sudden, unexpected engagement with "Hunger Games" star, Liam Hemsworth. It just proves that being a former Disney star and simply being Miley can spread over the internet. The news of Miley's engagement had been retweeted by over 3600 people making it the most talked about story of the year.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively tying the knot only managed to make it to the second spot. While Nicholas Sparks may be behind the whole Miley and Liam set-up, Sparks also lend a hand in spreading the great news of the Lively-Reynolds wedding with his tweet which is as follows.

However, not all stories that made it to the list are happy. In at number three is the story of the Sandy Hook tragedy. President Obama's heartfelt speech for the victims of the shooting had also been retweeted over 2000 times.

At number four is the sudden death of actor, Clarke Duncan. The story had been shared more than 3200 times on the social networking site, Facebook. Another celebrity death that caused a stir on the web was the untimely death of Whitney Houston. Houston's death dominated all social media sites from February to March.

The "TomKat" split also made it to number six and from June onwards it remains to be a talk of the town. In at number seven is Avril Lavigne getting engaged to Nickelback frontman, Chad Kroeger. A lot of readers had ironically thought the news was a joke.

In support of breast cancer, Kellie Pickler had shaved of her head for her best friend, Summer Holt Miller who had been diagnosed with cancer.

"Cancer does not discriminate. If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it," said Pickler in a statement to People Magazine.

Number 9 is that of Christian Bale visiting Aurora victims and in at number 10 is Channing Tatum named "Sexiest Man Alive." The news of the Royal baby made Twitter explode with joy making it to number 11.

Last but definitely not the least on the list is the photo of the micro-piglet hugging a strawberry of which was shared 7500 times on Instagram and Facebook. The photo most definitely placed the "aw" in awesome.
